Sheepskin, Leather, and Wool Care
Shearling Sheepskin Care
Sheepskin is a natural pelt that has sueded leather on one side and soft wool fibers on the other side. This luxurious material is very lightweight, breathable and naturally moisture-wicking. Shearling is the term that is used for sheepskin that has been shorn for a uniform look and feel.
Shearling sheepskin needs to be stored away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat. If storing in a garment bag, always use a cloth (not plastic) bag. If your shearling gets wet from rain or snow, shake off the excess moisture, gently blot with a towel and hang to dry at room temperature (never near a source of heat). After your shearling dries, the outside can be gently brushed with a suede brush.
For very small spills, use a damp towel and carefully pluck any dirt with tweezers. For larger spills, sprinkle corn starch on the stain and let sit for a day or two. Shake off excess corn starch and then gently brush with a suede brush. If your coat needs a deeper cleaning, do not take your coat to a dry cleaners. Shearling sheepskin should always be taken to a special leather and sheepskin cleaner.
Sheepskin slippers, mittens, and hats can be spot cleaned using a damp cloth and brushed with a suede brush. Sheepskin naturally contains lanolin, which helps keep your skin fresh. If your sheepskin accessories develop an odor, sprinkle baking soda on the inside and let sit overnight. Vacuum out the baking soda in the morning. For stronger odors, put your sheepskin accessory in the freezer for 1-2 days.
When properly cared for, your sheepskin shearling coats and accessories can last for generations. Please call us at 630.364.6381 if you have any further questions about how to care for your shearling sheepskin coats and accessories!
Leather Care
All of our leather jackets are made of sheep leather, which has a softer feel than cow leather. Sheep leather is the sheepskin without the wool attached (the wool is used then for wool products). Sheepskin leather is more supple and somewhat more prone to stretching than cow leather, so care must be taken to maintain it properly. Hang sheepskin leather jackets on hangers with broad, curved ends and always use cloth, not plastic, garment bags. Do not store in direct sunlight or other sources of heat or in a very dry or very humid conditions. If your leather jacket gets wet, hang it to air dry (but not near heat). You can use a leather conditioner to refresh your leather jacket, but do not use conditioners with petroleum or mineral oils as they can dry out the leather. Use a soft cloth to brush off dust or dirt. Always take your leather jacket to a special leather and sheepskin cleaner, not your regular dry cleaner, if your garment requires a deeper clean.
Leather bags are generally made of cow leather as they need to keep their shape and be more sturdy. To store your leather purse, stuff it with tissue paper (not newspaper) and keep in a cloth bag or pillowcase. If it gets dirty, spot clean with a damp cloth and let air dry. Never use a hairdryer to dry your wet bag. Use a leather conditioner to refresh your bag every few months or so.

Wool Care
Wool is a soft and breathable material and provides great natural insulation. To keep your wool coat or garment clean and fresh, follow the care instruction labels on the inside of your garment. Store your garment with enough room for it to "breathe" and for longer storage, dry clean it first and then place cedar blocks inside the pockets to ward off moths. Never hang your wool coat or garment near sources of heat and never use heat to dry wool. Spot clean with a damp cloth (use cold water to avoid shrinkage) and hang to air dry. For a deeper clean, check the care instructions to see whether it can be dry cleaned or washed in the washing machine.
